Failing your learners test isn't the end of the world. You can rebook. But it costs another fee, another trip, and a lot of confidence. The good news is that most failures come from the same handful of mistakes, and every one of them is avoidable.
1. Not knowing the section pass marks
Some tests aren't scored as a single total. The NSW DKT has two sections, and in the road safety section you can only get one question wrong. People walk out with 40 out of 45 and a fail. Know your state's format before you start practising. Our guides to the NSW DKT, VIC learner permit test and QLD road rules test cover each one.
2. Studying the wrong state's rules
There's no national learners test. Free online quizzes often mix rules from different states, or use another state's handbook altogether. A question about learner speed limits has a different answer in NSW than in Victoria. Make sure every question you practise is for your state.
3. Guessing on give-way questions
Intersections, roundabouts, T-intersections and turning traffic make up a big share of questions, and they're designed to test whether you really understand who goes first. If you find yourself choosing between two answers, go back to the handbook diagrams and work through them slowly.
4. Fuzzy numbers
Is it 10 metres from an intersection or 20? 40 km/h or 50? The options are close on purpose. A vague memory is a coin toss. Drill the numbers that catch learners out with flashcards until they're automatic.
5. Reading the handbook but never testing yourself
Re-reading feels like studying, but it builds recognition, not recall. The test needs recall. Answering practice questions from memory is far more effective, and we explain why in why practice tests beat re-reading.
6. Cramming
One long session the night before is the least reliable way to prepare. Short sessions spread over a week or two stick far better. A two-week study plan at 20 minutes a day is plenty for most people.
7. Rushing on the day
Many questions turn on a single word: "must", "may", "always", "unless". Read every question to the end and every option before you answer. Being familiar with the format from practice tests leaves you calm enough to do that.
How Oz DKT helps you avoid all seven
The Oz Driver Knowledge Test app was built around these exact problems. Choose your state and you get only that state's handbook and questions. Practice tests follow the real format, including separate section pass marks, so you'll know if you'd fail a section. Flashcards drill the numbers, and Smart Review keeps bringing back what you get wrong. Get it free on iOS and Android.
