Learners Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect

You've done the study. Now make sure nothing silly trips you up on the day. Requirements differ between states and change from time to time, so treat this as a checklist of things to confirm with your road authority, not a final list.

Before the day

  • Book the test. Check how and where with your state's road authority: Transport for NSW, VicRoads or Queensland Transport and Main Roads.
  • Check you're old enough. In NSW, VIC and QLD you need to be at least 16.
  • Pass a couple of full practice tests. In your state's real format, without looking anything up.
  • Check your proof of identity. Road authorities have a list of accepted documents and often need more than one. Find out exactly what yours accepts, and if you're under 18, whether a parent or guardian needs to sign anything.

What to bring

  • Your accepted identity documents (originals, not photocopies, unless told otherwise)
  • A way to pay the test and licence fees
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, as there's usually an eyesight test
  • Any forms your road authority asked you to complete

The night before

Don't cram. A short flashcard session on your weakest topics is fine, but sleep will do more for your score than another hour of questions. If you've followed a spaced study plan, the material is already there.

During the test

  • Read every question to the end. One word, like "unless" or "must", can flip the answer.
  • Read every option before choosing, even if the first one looks right.
  • Picture it. For give-way questions, imagine standing at the intersection.
  • Don't panic over one hard question. Answer it as best you can and move on.

If you don't pass

It happens, and you can resit. Before you rebook, look at which topics you struggled with. Our list of common reasons people fail may help you spot the gap.
