Search the App Store or Google Play for "learners test" and you'll find dozens of apps. Many look similar. Some are great, some are a stack of ads wrapped around a question list. Here's what we think actually matters, and the checklist we used when building the Oz Driver Knowledge Test app.
1. It's built for your state
Australia doesn't have one learners test. NSW, Victoria and Queensland each have their own handbook, their own question style and their own pass mark. An app that averages them out will teach you rules you don't need and skip ones you do, like Melbourne's hook turns or Queensland's rules about buses.
Oz DKT: pick NSW, VIC or QLD and the whole app follows. WA, SA, TAS, ACT and NT are in progress.
2. Practice tests match the real format
If your real test has sections with separate pass marks, your practice tests should too. Otherwise a score that looks like a pass might not be.
Oz DKT: full-length practice tests and a mock test built to your state's real format, including the NSW DKT's two sections.
3. It includes the handbook
Questions alone aren't enough. When you get one wrong you need to read the actual rule. Jumping between an app and a PDF on a phone is painful.
Oz DKT: the full road users' handbook for your state is included, split into readable sections, with search, bookmarks and notes. And it's free.
4. It helps you remember, not just test
The best study tools use spaced repetition and active recall, the two techniques with the strongest evidence behind them (more on that here).
Oz DKT: flashcards plus Smart Review, which schedules the questions you miss to come back at the right time.
5. It works offline
You'll study in odd moments: on the train, at lunch, in waiting rooms. An app that needs a connection fails you in exactly those places.
Oz DKT: everything is bundled with the app. No connection needed after install. (Why that matters.)
6. No ads, no subscription, no account
Ads slow you down and distract you. Subscriptions keep charging long after you've passed. Accounts collect data you didn't need to give.
Oz DKT: no ads, no sign-in, no subscription. Reading the handbook is free; a one-time A$9.99 purchase unlocks the practice test, mock test, flashcards and Smart Review. Your progress stays on your device.
7. It's honest about what it is
No app has the real exam questions. Those aren't published. Be wary of any app that claims to. A good app writes questions that match the official format and cover the same material.
Oz DKT: an independent study aid, not affiliated with any road authority. Our questions are written to match the official format from the official handbook content.
