QLD Road Rules Test: A Learner's Guide to Passing First Time

To get a learner licence in Queensland you need to pass the Road Rules Test, sometimes called the written road rules test or the learners test. It checks that you know Queensland's road rules before you get behind the wheel with a supervisor.

How the QLD Road Rules Test works

At the time of writing, the test has 30 multiple-choice questions and you need 27 correct to pass. That's a 90% pass mark, so you can only afford three mistakes. You must be at least 16 to apply for a learner licence. Check Queensland Transport and Main Roads for current requirements and where you can sit the test.

A 90% pass mark changes how you should study. "Mostly knowing" the rules isn't good enough. You need to be solid on all of them.

What's on the test

Questions are based on Queensland's road rules and cover:

  • Give way rules at intersections and roundabouts
  • Speed limits, school zones and road work zones
  • Alcohol limits, including zero alcohol for learners
  • Learner licence conditions and supervision
  • Signs, signals and road markings
  • Parking and stopping rules
  • Sharing the road with cyclists, pedestrians and heavy vehicles

Queensland rules to watch for

Most road rules are shared across Australia, but each state has its own variations. One that regularly surprises learners in Queensland is the rule about giving way to buses signalling to pull out from a bus stop. Read the handbook section on buses carefully rather than assuming it works the same as elsewhere.

Numbers matter too: speeds, distances from intersections and crossings, and alcohol limits are easy marks if you've drilled them. Our list of numbers that catch learners out is a good place to start.

How to prepare

  1. Read the rules once, in short chunks. Don't try to read everything in a night.
  2. Move to questions quickly. Answering questions from memory is what makes rules stick.
  3. Review every wrong answer. With only three mistakes allowed, every gap matters.
  4. Sit full 30-question practice tests until you're consistently scoring 28 or more.
